"Cool Earth 50": Japanese Initiative Proposes Reducing Emissions in Half By 2050

Source : ECLAC Press Release

Japan has the lowest levels of carbon emissions in the world, thanks to a successful programme that increased energy efficiency by over 30% during the past 30 years. This country has launched its proposal "Cool Earth 50" to reduce global emissions in half by 2050, with the support of international cooperation and innovation.

To present this initiative, economist and researcher Dr. Akio Hosono will offer the conference "Climate Change: Cool Earth 50 and international cooperation" at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago, Chile, this Thursday, April 9 at 11 a.m. (3477 Dag Hammarskjöld Ave., Vitacura, Celso Furtado Conference Room).

The expert, who will be received by ECLAC Executive Secretary Alicia Bárcena, will speak on Japan's experience in environmental management and the importance of increasing international cooperation for developing countries to implement measures to revert the severe effects of climate change and reach equilibrium between emission reduction and economic growth.

Dr. Hosono believes that innovation is a key tool to reducing emissions.

Akio Hosono has a PhD in Economic Sciences from the University of Tokyo, and was Vice Chancellor of the University of Tsukuba. For 12 years, ending in 1976, he worked at ECLAC in the area of trade and development. He was also member of the Mexico-Japan Joint Committee for a bilateral FTA, and Vice President of the Study Committee on a possible FTA between Japan and Chile, organized by JETRO.

Dr. Hosono was Ambassador of Japan in El Salvador in 2003, and as of 2007, is senior advisor to the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA). He is currently a member of the Permanent Chile-Japan Forum created in 2005.

The media is welcome to attend Dr. Akio Hosono's conference..
